HomeTeam Hot Shots
A spotlight on the Times’ bay area players of the week.

Male Hot Shot: Jake Schoonover, Fivay
Sport: Golf
Skinny: Schoonover began his career at Hudson, so maybe he felt extra pressure to dominate the Cobras in last week’s tri-match with Zephyrhills and Hudson. Whatever the reason, the senior did dominate. He finished his round with 5-under 31 to lead a Falcons team that ranks among the best on the North Suncoast. Schoonover, a third-team all-conference selection last fall, has helped fill a void left by Austin Padova, a three-time state qualifier who signed with North Florida. “Whether he’s playing his best game or playing his worst game, he keeps his composure,” Falcons coach Richard Bynum said. “He’s always calm, always relaxed. He just keeps a level head.”

Female Hot Shot:  Kellyanne Hurst, Plant City
Sport: Golf
Skinny: In a four-day span, Hurst, battling a nasty cold, finished as low medalist in three dual matches (two of them Raiders victories). The highlight was 1-under 35 on the tight front nine of Lutz’s Heritage Harbor in a 16-stroke loss to Steinbrenner. “I was pretty dead on with my approach shots and my putting was good,” said Hurst, who needed only 14 putts in the round. The next day at River Hills, Hurst’s 3-over 39 led all players in the Raiders’ seven-stroke win against Durant. Two days later, she struggled to a 42 at Plant City’s Walden Lake, but still led all golfers in a win against King. “(The cold) was just a little (rough) on Monday and it progressively got worse as the week went on,” she said. In five matches this year, the junior has been low medalist in each, reflective of the breakthrough offseason she enjoyed. She won six events on the MidFlorida Junior Golf Tour this past summer, earning Player of the Year honors for her age group (13-18).
