A spotlight on the Times’ bay area players of the week
Male Hot Shot: Ryan Davis, Northeast
Sport: Football
Skinny: The sophomore quarterback had a wild night Friday against Tarpon Springs. After throwing two interceptions to end the first half, he completed his next 13 passes and helped the Vikings to a 41-37 comeback win. He threw for 343 yards and six touchdown passes, five in the second half. “The kid just doesn’t give up,’’ Northeast coach Mike Jalazo said. “He’s a great competitor.”
Female Hot Shot: Claudia Cancello, Mitchell
Sport: Swimming, cross country
Skinny: The senior two-sport star had one of the best weeks of her career, earning her first cross country victory at the Mitchell Invitational. Her time of 20:18 beat Gulf star Kari Grippo by 20 seconds on a challenging course. Four days later, Cancello placed first in the 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley in meets against Ridgewood and Anclote. She also joined the Mustangs’ winning 200 free relays. Cancello says competing in one sport helps her increase her cardio for the other. She first fell in love with swimming but now hopes to run competitively in college.
