Zach Zifer was on display Thursday night, rotating with freshman Alex McGough at quarterback for Wesley Chapel.
Zifer is a Pasco transfer, who played a portion of last spring for the Pirates before he left the team. He was in a tough fight for the starting job against Pasco junior Jacob Guy.
Zifer finished Thursday’s game completing 3-of-4 passes for 26 yards, and a 5-yard touchdown run in a 33-6 victory against first-year program Fivay. First-year coach Ben Alford raved about his freshman Friday afternoon. McGough finished 6-for-9 for 96 yards and a touchdown pass.
“I have a frshman quarterback who is a stud,” Alford said. “He is young, but he’ll get two to three series a week. If he has a hot hand he could play more.”
Former Wildcats starter Keegan Tanner is the third-string quarterback, but Alford plans to use him a ton, starting Tanner at receiver, in the secondary and on special teams.
