Wharton small forward Xavier Owens, who helped guide the Wildcats to within a game of the Class 6A final four last winter, has signed with Division I Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Md.
Owens (6-foot-5, 215 pounds), initially set to attend prep school for the 2011-12 school year, signed Monday and heads to college this weekend.
Recruited as a shooting guard/small forward, Owens averaged nearly a double-double (16.5 ppg, 9.7 rpg) last season for Wharton (23-6), which fell to Orlando Dr. Phillips by three points in the 6A region finals.
Owens said he landed on the Mountaineers' radar courtesy of first-year MSM assistant Darryl Bruce, who had recruited Owens while on the Jacksonville University staff.
Mount St. Mary's competes in the Northeast Conference.
