TAMPA — As the scorers prepared to announce the results from the Wiregrass-Mitchell swim meet Wednesday evening, many of the Bulls swimmers inched toward boys coach Tanner Schmitz.
Schmitz most likely knew a dip in the pool in the much-cooler October weather may not be the greatest feeling. But after his boys nipped county power Mitchell 88-81 at the New Tampa YMCA, he will gladly take that dive every Wednesday if need be.
“I’m cold but you know what, I’ll take being thrown in the pool every week,” he said. “We came together great. We had a couple swimmers missing and plugged in some last-minute replacements and they stepped up.
“Now that we have knocked off one of the big three, people need to start talking about us.”
Wiregrass’ Matt Menendez captured the 500 free (5:20.59), finished second in the 200 free (1:58.39) and was a part of the winning 400 medley relay (3:46.78). Mitchell’s Devin McCaffrey had a solid night, taking the 200 free (1:57.87), 100 fly (57.54) and was a part of the top-placing 200 medley relay (2:17.88). Also finishing well was the Mustangs’ Gavin Hunt, who took the 50 (23.61) and 100 free (52.07).
The Wiregrass girls had a little easier time and outdistanced the Mitchell girls 95-70.
The Bulls easily took the 200 medley relay (2:04.75) and also captured the 400 medley (4:20.64). Wiregrass’ Makyala Strickland took the 50 free (28.40) and Mitchell’s Paige Hammer impressed by taking the 100 free (1:01.74) and the 100 backstroke (1:13.79).
