Wiregrass Ranch girls basketball coach Greg Finkel has resigned following a recruiting investigation. Finkel said he turned in his letter of resignation Thursday morning and that it was effective immediately.
The Florida High School Athletic Association ruled last month that Finkel didn’t cooperate fully with the investigation and provided false information regarding the recruitment of Briahanna Jackson, who landed at Wiregrass Ranch two weeks after transferring from Lecanto to Wesley Chapel.
"I’ve obviously gone through a whole bunch last year with that investigation," Finkel said. "Basically I’m very disappointed with the outcome of the investigation, of course. I spent over 20 professional years coaching, and honestly it’s about time I stepped down anyway and enjoyed my family."
Finkel declined to comment on allegations that he wasn’t truthful to the FHSAA. He said he would continue to teach driver’s education at Wiregrass Ranch but probably won’t return to coaching.
"From my disappointment with how this turned out, I can’t foresee myself coaching any more," Finkel said. "That’s speaking from the heart right now."
The FHSAA also put the Bulls’ girls basketball program on probation for two years and fined the school $12,525 following the investigation.
On Wednesday, the FHSAA announced that Wiregrass Ranch would appeal the fine but wouldn’t appeal the other punishments.
