Newsome senior shooting guard Samal Shepherd, who will exit the program with 11 school records, has received a scholarship offer from Division II Saint Leo, Wolves coach Jon Mackey confirmed.

No other formal offers have arrived, but Shepherd, who led Newsome to within a game of the Class 5A final four this past season, could generate 11th-hour interest in coming weeks.

Basketball's monthlong spring signing period starts April 14, and Shepherd could get more offers once college coaches discover which of their initial recruits didn't pan out. Just why Shepherd isn't among the initial recruits of many schools remains a mystery.

A gifted shooter and handler with good size (6-foot-4), Shepherd owns a 4.5 GPA. Last season, he averaged 17.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and nearly three assists.
