Zephyrhills senior athlete Jamal Roberts has verbally committed to Kent State, Bulldogs coach Reggie Roberts said Monday morning.
Jamal Roberts landed offers from UMass and Kent State over the weekend and pledged to the Flashes on Sunday evening after visiting the school.
"He's playing football at the highest level," his coach said. "He's going to be great."
The speedy 5-foot-10, 170-pound senior quarterback was one of the North Suncoast's breakout stars last year. He threw for six touchdowns and 542 yards and rushed for 20 TDs and 1,030 yards. Roberts' emergence helped Zephyrhills turn around from back-to-back 2-8 seasons to a 6-4 finish and a duel with Fivay for a trip to the playoffs.
Roberts was a first-team all-North Suncoast pick, a Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-Star and an all-conference selection for football and track. The sprinter placed second at district last year in the 100 meters (11.15 seconds).
His coach said Roberts felt the MAC program was a natural pick for him.
"It was a great academic fit and a good athletic fit," his coach said.
Roberts plans to sign Wednesday after school during a National Signing Day ceremony.
