Zephyrhills replaces longtime swim coach Shannon Mathews

Shannon Mathews, who established Zephyrhills' swimming program in 1997, has been replaced as coach, the school announced Thursday. 

Mathews is switching jobs and will now be a graduate enhancement teacher at Ridgewood. She will continue to coach on a voluntary basis three days a week, Zephyrhills principal Steve Van Gorden said in an e-mail announcement.

Mathews helped gain attention last year when the city began pursuing a plan to shut down the community pool in a cost-cutting measure. Her efforts helped keep the pool open through the end of the season. The Bulldogs are swimming at the Hercules Aquatic Center this season after it reopened earlier this year.

Mathews will be replaced by James Washington, who also coached the Bulldogs last season.
