Chris downgraded to post-tropical cyclone, will bring rain, dangerous surf to Canada

Although Chris may no longer be a hurricane, the storm could still have a significant impact on weather both on the East Coast and Canada as it races across the Atlantic and toward Canada.

Hours after being downgraded to a tropical storm, Chris was declared a post-tropical cyclone over the colder Atlantic waters as of Thursday morning at 11 a.m.

The storm has maximum sustained winds of 70 mph with higher gusts, according to the National Hurricane Center. It was located about 275 miles southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland, and quickly moving northeast at 36 mph.

The downgrade comes one day after Chris quickly escalated into a Category 2 storm packing 105 mph winds.

HURRICANE GUIDE: Emergency information, tracking map and storm resources

On its current path, Chris would pass over or near the Avalon Peninsula in southeastern Newfoundland later Thursday or early Friday and weaken on a path toward Iceland and perhaps Ireland.

Although Chris is moving away from the United States, it will continue to generate swells from North Carolina to New England before bringing life-threatening surf and rip currents to portions of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland later Thursday into Friday, forecasters said.

The storm could bring as much as 6 inches of rain and localized flash flooding to Newfoundland, forecasters said.

Meanwhile, the remnants of Beryl remain disorganized over the western Atlantic while dumping showers and thunderstorms in the Bahamas. As of Thursday at 2 p.m., it was located 400 miles west-southwest of Bermuda and moving to the northeast. There is a 50 percent chance it re-forms into a tropical system over the weekend as it tracks east in the Atlantic and away from land.
