303 affected by largest mumps surge in years

A health official says 303 people have been diagnosed with mumps in the suburban New York towns of Monsey and New Square as the nation's largest outbreak of the disease in years spreads. Almost all the cases are among Orthodox Jews. Investigators say the outbreak started in August at a Jewish summer camp in Sullivan County with an 11-year-old boy who brought the disease from England. It has since spread to Jewish communities in Brooklyn, New Jersey and Orange County in upstate New York. Mumps is spread by coughing and sneezing with the most common symptoms being fever, headache and swollen salivary glands under the jaw.

Retired police say crime data cooked

More than a hundred retired New York Police Department captains and higher-ranking officials said in a survey that the intense pressure to produce annual crime reductions led some supervisors and precinct commanders to manipulate crime statistics, according to two criminologists studying the department. The retired members of the force reported that they were aware of instances of "ethically inappropriate" changes to complaints of crimes in the seven categories measured by the department's signature CompStat program, according to a summary of the results of the survey and interviews with the researchers who conducted it.

Six are shot dead in drug hot spot

Gunmen killed six people at a bar Saturday in the northern state of Sinaloa, a drug-violence hot spot, state prosecutors said. At least three gunmen walked into Las Herraduras bar in the resort city of Mazatlan early Saturday and opened fire, killing a customer and two waiters, said Martin Gatelum, spokesman for the Sinaloa state prosecutor's office. A taxi driver and a night watchman were killed outside the bar, where the assailants also shot to death a hostage who had led them to the bar, Gatelum said. Sinaloa, Mexico's drug-smuggling heartland, is the birthplace of the leaders of four of the six major cartels.

Spain: Jairo Miguel Sanchez Alonso, a 16-year-old matador, killed six bulls in one afternoon Saturday, pulling off a feat normally attempted only by seasoned veterans.

Lebanon: Search crews have located the black box under parts of the tail of the Ethiopian Airlines jet that crashed into the Mediterranean Sea last month, Lebanon's transportation minister said Saturday. The Boeing 737 crashed Jan. 25 in a fierce thunderstorm. All 90 people on board died.
