What were they thinking?

We're shaking our heads along with the rest of social media after seeing the Colombian women's cycling team. Their uniforms, with a flesh-colored section between stomach and thighs, was worn by riders at the Tour of Tuscany in Italy over the weekend. On Monday, International Cycling Union president Brian Cookson — responding to a social-media uproar — called the uniforms "unacceptable by any standard of decency" on Twitter. Cookson said the governing body is investigating the issue. "We are on the case," he tweeted. It's unclear if the six-member team was intended to be outfitted in similar uniforms next week while representing Colombia at the road world championships in Spain. The team is sponsored by the city of Bogota, which makes Sports Talk think that a male bureaucrat signed off on them.

space ace

Golf shot was out of this world

Andy Sullivan is ranked No. 216 in the world golf rankings. Some day soon he may soar to be the top golfer — in space. Sullivan made a hole-in-one on Sunday at the 163-yard 15th hole at Kennemer Golf Club, site of the KLM Open in the Netherlands. Sullivan, who finished third, won a unique prize for his ace: a trip to space aboard the Lynx Mark 1 valued at $100,000. The voyage was being offered by XCOR Space Expeditions, one of the tournament's sponsors. Sullivan told reporters he was unsure when he would take the company up on the offer. "I'll see what the missus says," the 28-year-old Englishman joked, according to ESPN.com. XCOR is an Amersterdam company that will begin offering trips to space for the public in 2015.

Three thoughts

tbt*'s Tom Jones on the Rice saga

1 It's stunning that some Ravens fans, including women, would wear a Ray Rice's No. 27 jersey to the game on Thursday night, then defend it, in some cases, by saying Rice was merely hitting his wife after she hit him first. Like that makes it okay. That told me two things. One, domestic violence might be so prevalent that many try to justify it instead of seeing the problem with it. And, two, some fans will defend anyone on their team because it's their team.

2 Is there anyone in the NFL office who can tell commissioner Roger Goodell when he is about to say or do something that is careless, incompetent or downright stupid? Apparently not because Goodell keeps saying careless, incompetent and downright stupid things. Seems to me that he is surrounded by nothing but "yes" people.

3 Let me get this straight. The 49ers suspend their radio broadcaster for two games because he says something insensitive about domestic violence, but they don't suspend one of their players who was arrested on domestic violence charges? So you can hit a woman, but just don't talk about it.
