armed man holding family hostage is talked into releasing them

A hostage situation between an armed man and two family members in southwest Florida has ended peacefully. Lee County Sheriff's deputies headed into a duplex early Saturday morning after reports of gunshots where they say an armed man was holed up inside with two family members. Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Larry King said hostage negotiators talked with the man inside while one of the women escaped through a back window. But the man's mother, who is in a wheelchair, was still inside. Negotiators eventually convinced him to bring her outside. At that time the unidentified suspect was arrested. Authorities said the incident escalated from an argument the night before.

Painter falls into empty slurry tank

A painter is recovering after falling into a slurry tank at a South Florida water treatment plant. Officials said 45-year-old Shabam El Saidy slipped through a ladder rung, fell a few feet into the 28-foot tall empty sewage tank and broke his foot Friday. Saidy couldn't climb out of the tank so fire rescue officials had to lift him out in a basket. The Sun Sentinel reported that Saidy had been painting the inside of the tank. Alan Garcia, director of Broward County's water and wastewater services, said El Saidy wasn't seriously injured.

Deputies with K-9 dogs and a helicopter searched the area for a possible suspect, but authorities didn't find anyone. Investigators questioned witnesses and collected evidence Saturday. The victim has not been identified and authorities did not say how many times he was shot or release any other details.

The victim was not identified and authorities did not say whether they suspect foul play.

A man died Saturday after a fire broke out in his Jacksonville home. Investigators say a space heater in the bedroom may be to blame. Firefighters responded to the home around 5:30 a.m. and found the house engulfed in flames. After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters found a man's body in the bedroom. The Florida Times-Union reported that the victim has not been identified, but authorities said he appeared to be in his 60s or 70s. Officials do not suspect foul play.
