BEVERLY HILLS — A retired New Britain, Conn., police officer has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape and torture of his estranged wife, who shot him in the chest to escape.
Daniel Begley Sr., 56, was convicted of sexual battery and kidnapping in connection with the attack. Authorities say he wanted revenge because she planned to end their marriage.
Authorities say the 2006 incident happened at the couple's home in Beverly Hills in Citrus County. He was sentenced on June 19.
Florida prosecutors say he tied her up, put duct tape over her mouth and kept her captive for hours while he beat, raped and tortured her.
She was able to free herself when Begley left the room to check on their young children, and she shot him in the chest with his .38-caliber revolver when he came back.
His estranged wife, who fled naked to a neighbor's home for help, was not charged because authorities determined she was in fear for her life.
Begley retired from the New Britain Police Department more than a decade ago after 24 years as an officer, the Herald of New Britain reported in Saturday's editions.
His attorney says Begley will appeal his conviction.
