Florida GOP plans straw poll, debate
The Republican Party of Florida will hold a 2012 presidential straw poll and Fox News-partnered debate in September as part of a three-day Orlando event. In a prepared statement, the party said, Presidency 5 "will be a critical test of grass roots support for Republican presidential candidates" to be held Sept. 22-24 at the Orange County Convention Center. "I am proud to announce the details of this important event," said RPOF chairman Dave Bitner. "Presidency 5 will give the candidates an opportunity to bring their message directly to the people of Florida while allowing voters to participate in a poll that has historically predicted the eventual Republican nominee for president." Haitian candidate loses U.S. houses
A former singer vying to become the next president of Haiti has lost three South Florida properties to foreclosure. The Miami Herald reports that Michel "Sweet Micky" Martelly lost two Broward County homes and one Palm Beach County property for lack of payment. Martelly's campaign spokesman, Damian Merlo, says the properties were investments. Merlo says the investments failed when the economy tanked. Martelly faces former first lady Mirlande Manigat in a runoff election March 20.
