Freedom's Patchan commits to Hurricanes

Freedom defensive end Scott Patchan orally committed to Miami, he announced Saturday via Twitter during a trip to the Hurricanes' spring scrimmage.

Patchan (6-feet-6, 240 pounds) is one of Tampa Bay's top recruits. Rivals.com rates the junior a four-star recruit and the country's No. 17 strongside defensive end. He was No. 6 in the Tampa Bay Times' early look at the area's top 2015 prospects.

He chose Miami over more than 20 other schools, including Florida State, USF, UCF, Ohio State and Notre Dame.

Patchan's father, David, played for Miami and was drafted by the Eagles. His older brother, Matt, starred at Armwood High, played for the Gators and Boston College and is an NFL draft prospect.

Oral commitments are non-binding.
