TEHRAN, Iran — Iran state radio said two men were hanged in a public park on Sunday after posting a video on YouTube showing them robbing and assaulting a man with a machete on a Tehran street.
The execution of the men, both 24, was carried out after officials called for a speedy investigation and trial because of public outrage. The video emerged in early December and was later shown on state TV.
Hundreds of convicts are hanged in prisons every year, but a public hanging in a central park in Tehran is rare, according to judicial officials and international human rights organizations.
The semiofficial ISNA news agency said nearly 300 people witnessed the hangings.
