Meat packer recalls 40,000 pounds of beef

Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. has recalled more than 40,000 pounds of ground beef after a test confirmed the presence of E. coli, the Agriculture Department said Friday. The products were shipped to institutions in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The USDA referred consumer questions to the company at 866-328-3156.

Three people were killed and two more injured Friday in a California office complex shooting, police said. The suspected gunman was among the dead. The people were shot about 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Southern California Edison office building in Irwindale.
