Bus driver saves falling 7-year-old
A New York City bus driver was being hailed as a hero for saving a 7-year-old girl who fell three stories from an air-conditioning unit outside a Brooklyn building. "I just prayed that I'd catch her," Stephen St. Bernard recalled after rescuing the child on Monday. St. Bernard said he was walking home from work when he saw the girl standing on the air-conditioning unit before falling. She was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. St. Bernard, a father of four, suffered a torn tendon in his shoulder. Neighbors said the girl is a special needs child.
King, prince have to cut back, too
Spain's king and crown prince are taking pay cuts as part of the latest round of austerity measures meted out by the country's government as it attempts to control its deficit during a recession, the Royal Palace said Tuesday. The salaries of King Juan Carlos and Crown Prince Felipe will be reduced about 7 percent — to about $334,000 and $160,000 respectively. The royal family itself has about $10.2 million budgeted for it this year, down 2 percent from 2011.

South Africa said Tuesday that 281 of the country's endangered rhinoceros have been killed by poachers in the first six months of the year. The figures in the midyear review indicate that poaching is still on the rise in South Africa, where 448 rhinos were killed last year, up from 333 in 2010. South Africa is home to about 20,000 rhinos, more than any other country.
