Mallard rules the roost at supermarket
The eggs may not be fresh, but they are drawing attention at an Ohio supermarket. A female mallard duck is nesting atop bags of mulch just outside the garden center of the store in Medina, and a sign advises shoppers to get their mulch from another pile at the store entrance. The Akron Beacon Journal reported that the duck is sitting on at least 10 eggs in a nest on top of an 8-foot stack of bags. Store officials think she laid the eggs a couple of weeks ago. A store spokeswoman told the newspaper two male mallards were seen in the parking lot earlier this spring.
Free bites on Pretzel Day
A Pennsylvania pretzel company was distributing free pretzels Tuesday as part of National Pretzel Day celebrations. The Philly Pretzel Factory said it was giving a free pretzel to customers at its more than 100 locations in honor of the holiday first declared by Congress in 1983, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Rival establishment Auntie Anne's said it too was marking National Pretzel Day, as well as National Dance Week, with a Pretzel Twist dance created by So You Think You Can Dance finalist Alex Wong.
Heads scratched over hair theft
Chicago police are rooting around for information to figure out who stole human hair from a beauty-supply company. Authorities said a "very valuable" amount of hair was taken early Sunday from the Beauty One shop. Culprits apparently pried open a huge steel door secured with two deadbolt locks, then swiped the hair. No dollar amount for the hair was given. A police sergeant said he has been to a lot of robberies, but never one involving hair.
