Watch for Perseids meteor shower this weekend

Perseids will dot weekend's skies

One of the year's best chances to see a meteor shower is this weekend, as the Earth passes through the trail of debris behind a comet. They are called the Perseid meteors, named because they appear to emanate from the constellation Perseus. Earth passes through Comet Swift-Tuttle's orbit around this time every year, and when the small rocks hit our atmosphere, they appear as stars streaking across the sky. The Perseids will peak in the wee hours of Sunday and Monday mornings, so look to the skies after midnight tonight and the next night.

Old dime fetches $1.6 million

A dime made in 1873 has cost someone $1.6 million. An anonymous bidder won the pristine coin, said Chris Napolitano, president of Stack's Bowers Galleries, which auctioned it during an American Numismatic Association convention in Philadelphia. With a 15 percent buyer's fee, the final price was $1.84 million, he said Friday. The rare coin was minted in Carson City, Nev., during a one-day run of dimes.

Airline fined for dancers on flight

Vietnam state media say an airline was fined 20 million dong ($960) after beauty queens in bikini tops performed to dance music during a flight. A YouTube video shows young women gyrating in the aisle as male passengers snap photos on the Vietjet Air flight. Vietjet said the event inaugurated flights from Ho Chi Minh City to coastal Nha Trang and safety regulations were followed. The government said the airline staged the three-minute show Aug. 3 without official approval.
