Council meeting ends with Mayor on the floor
A Windermere Town Council meeting ended abruptly after a confrontation between the mayor and the husband of Town Manager Cecilia Bernier.
Officials said it was not clear whether Mayor Gary Bruhn fell or was pushed Tuesday night as he exchanged words with Roland Bernier. But he crashed into a table and fell to the floor, where he was briefly unconscious.
The confrontation came after the mayor questioned Cecilia Bernier's management abilities, blaming her for a police scandal, among other things. Then Roland Bernier came to the podium and made accusations about the mayor's private life, officials said.
Windermere is near Orlando.
Officials: 4 tried to send engines to Iran
Four family members with ties to Colombia have been charged with illegally attempting to export 22 engines for jet fighters to Iran.
Felipe Echeverry of Bogota is charged with conspiring to violate the U.S. embargo against Iran and related counts, federal prosecutors said Wednesday. Three of his family members face similar charges.
Court documents say an undercover U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent posing as a broker answered an Internet ad offering jet engines for the F-5 fighter.
Agents say the engines were stored in a Miami warehouse.
An affidavit says the agent and Echeverry settled on a $320,000 price for the engines.
Three of those charged have been arrested. Prosecutors say Echeverry is believed to be in Colombia.
Couple's 68 cats have to be euthanized
Animal services officials euthanized 68 cats found at two properties owned by a North Florida couple.
An additional 100 felines were found at a third property. Officials said Wednesday that they will be evaluated to see whether they can be adopted.
Authorities say the couple would take feral cats, feed them and give them medical care.
A neighbor said he would find a dozen cats in his yard in the mornings.
