Live blog: Bucs outlast Browns, 26-23, in overtime

After missing an extra point and field goal-attempt earlier in the game, Chandler Catanzaro converts from 59 yards to lift Tampa Bay over Cleveland and snap a three-game losing streak.

Bucs, Chandler Catanzaro redeem themselves in 26-23 win over Browns

TAMPA — Chandler Catanzaro needed redemption. So did the Bucs.

Having missed an extra point and a 40-yard field goal to win the game at the end of regulation, Catanzaro connected on a career-long 59-yard field with 1:50 remaining in overtime to give the Bucs a 26-23 win over the Cleveland Browns Sunday.

It never should’ve come to this.

Fourth quarter

And ... it’s no good! Bucs and Browns will go to overtime tied at 23.

It all comes down to this: Chandler Catanzaro attempting a 40-yard field goal to win the game.

Winston to Brate, and Bucs have a first down at the Browns 24. 0:42 remaining.

Winston slides down across the 40, just short of a first down. Defensive holding penalty gives the Bucs a first down.

Winston connects with Humphries to move the ball out across midfield, but the play is nullified by a hold on Donovan Smith.

Bucs back on the move, as the game goes to the two-minute warning.

Well, so much for that defensive stand. Mayfield hits a diving Jarvis Landry, who reaches across the goal line for the score. Greg Joseph’s PAT kick is true, and the Browns tie the game at 23 with 2:28 to play.

Oh, boy. Jabrill Peppers returns Bryan Anger’s punt 32 yards to the Bucs 15.

Emmanuel Ogbah, yeah, him again, brings down Winston on third down, and the Browns will get the ball right back.

Huge! Mayfield fails to break the plane on 4th-and-goal from the 1/2-yard line.

Chubb stopped short of the goal line on third down.

Play-action pass to Jarvis Landy puts the Browns at the Bucs 2.

And, of course, a false start penalty pushes them back.

Mayfield rifles a 23-yard pass to Njoku over the middle, and the Browns are at the Bucs 6.

Nick Chubb powers forward 12 yards to the 29.

Mayfield scrambles 35 (!) yards for the first down at the Bucs' 41.

Mayfield throws high for Landry, and it’s 2nd-and-26.

Linebacker Kwon Alexander lost to a knee injury

TAMPA — Bucs linebacker Kwon Alexander, who was flying around and making plays all over the field in the first half, was injured a few plays before halftime of the Tampa Bay’s game against Cleveland and will not return.

Alexander suffered a knee injury that at first appeared so severe, players from both teams knelt on the field as Bucs training staff attended to him. But Alexander walked off the field on his own.

Rookie Ronald Jones scores his first NFL touchdown, and the Bucs open up a two-touchdown lead, 23-9. The run caps a 13-play, 73-yard drive.

Winston finds tight end Alan Cross for the first down.

Winston’s pass batted away by Emmanuel Ogbah on 3rd-and-1. Bucs will go for it on fourth down.

The Bucs move across midfield on an 8-yard Winston pass to O.J. Howard.

Mayfield throws short for Landry, and the Browns will have to punt.

William Gholston sacks Mayfield, setting up 3rd-and-16 from the Browns 28.

Well, look who it is. Mayfield finds former Gator Antonio Callaway for a first down on 3rd-and-3, moving the ball out to the Browns 29.

Mayfield throws deep for Jarvis Landry, but the ball is well over his head.

Nick Chubb picks up a quick 7 yards on a burst up the middle.

Bryan Anger pins Browns deep in their territory.

Winston throws deep, but his pass goes off the hands of Adam Humphries, and the Bucs will have to punt.

A promising Bucs drive now faces 3rd-and-25 from the Browns 43.

The Browns make the Bucs pay for the turnover, as Mayfield hits tight end David Njoku with a touchdown pass over Isaiah Johnson. Browns cut Bucs lead to 16-9.

Bucs-Browns: The most important play so far

TAMPA — The Bucs' defense is pitching a shutout, even if it’s offense isn’t.

Tampa Bay led Cleveland, 16-2, at halftime Sunday at Raymond James Stadium, and yes, they are the Browns. But a Bucs defense that ranked as the NFL’s worst by several measures has been a big story in the first half.

But what was the most important play of the half? Our Bucs coverage team weighs in.

Second quarter

Jameis Winston takes a knee, running out the first-half clock.

Browns going for it on 4th-and-2 from the 12. Mayfield avoids the blitz and appears to gain the first down, but Lavonte David knocks the ball out of his hands and it bounces back behind the first-down marker. The Browns will turn the ball over on downs.

Uh-oh. Cameron Brate fumbles near the Bucs 30, and Christian Kirksey returns the ball to the 20 with less than a minute left in the half.

Winston to Jacquizz Rodgers over the middle, giving the Bucs some breathing room out to the 12.

Ryan Smith called for illegal block in the back, and the Bucs will start from their own 1.

And, they’ve got him again. Carl Nassib swallows up Mayfield for the Bucs' second sack of the game.

And there’s the first real mistake of the half, as Winston throws behind O.J. Howard and is intercepted by Christian Kirksey.

Jameis Winston fires a laser to Mike Evans down the right sideline, and the Bucs are in business at the Browns 44 following the 29-yard gain.

After digging themselves into a 1st-and-25 hole, the Browns again fail to reach the line to gain and punt back to the Bucs.

And, the Bucs get it right back. Jameis Winston scrambles 14 yards and dives into the end zone for his first rushing touchdown of the season. Catanzaro connects, and it’s 16-2 Bucs.

Peyton Barber up the middle for a 4-yard Bucs touchdown! ... Or not. Holding penalty on Evan Smith brings it back.

Ronald Jones up the middle to the Browns 5.

Winston sacked by Emmanuel Ogbah, but play is nullified by a defensive holding penalty.

DeSean Jackson nearly pulls off a contested touchdown catch, but Denzel Ward rips the ball loose.

Winston-Howard again for 18 yards, and the Bucs are inside the Browns 20.

Winston hits O.J. Howard over the middle, and it’s another Bucs first down at the 37.

Winston completion to Mike Evans moves the ball to the Browns 47.

Winston pressured, and he scrambles 14 yards for a first down to the Bucs 39.

Kwon Alexander blows up Breshad Perriman on 3rd-and-14, and the Browns have to kick the ball away again.

Browns take over at their 35.

Wow! DeSean Jackson goes 14 yards for a touchdown on an end-around, and the Bucs strike quickly to start the second quarter. Catanzaro hits the upright on the PAT attempt, and the Bucs settle for a 9-2 lead.

First quarter

Winston connects with Humphries for a first down inside the 15, as the quarter ends.

Winston underthrows O.J. Howard, and it’s 3rd-and-6.

Godwin for 4 yards to the 26.

And there’s Godwin again, giving the Bucs a first down inside the 30.

Winston hits a leaping Chris Godwin for 15 yards, and the Bucs are quickly in Cleveland territory.

Mayfield throws incomplete for tight end David Njoku, and Bucs will regain possession.

Browns facing 3rd-and-8 from their 27.

Chandler Catanzaro good from 38 yards, and the Bucs move ahead, 3-2, with 3:02 to play in the first.

A backpedaling Winston hit as he throws by Jamie Collins and throws incomplete.

Scrambling Winston chased out of bounds after a gain of two. It’s now 3rd-and-8 from the 20.

Now, that’s better. A leaping Mike Evans pulls in a Winston pass for a gain of 17 to the Browns 22.

Winston waaaay overthrows a wide-open DeSean Jackson down the right sideline.

Winston finds Humphries again for a first down inside the Browns 40.

Barber picks up the first down.
