Ernest Hooper: Effort to revive Urban League can fill a void in Tampa

A former U.S. Marine, Tampa businessman Stanley Gray knows all about a few good women and men.

Now he’s looking for a few good corporations to help revive the Tampa-Hillsborough County Urban League. The chapter disbanded in 2006 after its efforts to revive a historic West Tampa building ran over budget.

Gray is part of a group looking to bring back the league and help boost the community through inclusion-focused efforts.

"We’re in search of a few dedicated Hillsborough County corporations with a social conscience and commitment for positive action," Gray said.

For now, it’s not about money, it’s about the mission. Gray wants a new Urban League to help improve the living wage for the disenfranchised. Email him: [email protected]

The loss of the Urban League left a void in Tampa, and filling that void will be a benefit to all. .?.?.

Seen on a bumper sticker: Better To Lose A Lover Than Love A Loser. .?.?.

Kudos to Tampa’s Andre Kirwan, who for the 10th consecutive year will distribute gently worn clothes and other needy items to the homeless on Thanksgiving and Christmas through his No Strings Attached nonprofit.

Drop off donations at MorningStar Church, 5102 W Linebaugh Ave. .?.?.

A tattered and well-worn flier blew into my friend’s New Hampshire yard, but the request reflected in colorful crayons still proved legible. A child listed, "31 Reasons for a Hamster." No. 1: "So Cute." No. 24: "I will practice ukulele more."

Sometimes the most innocent acts resonate in a special way. On this week of Thanksgiving, I’m thankful my heart still can be touched.

That’s all I’m saying.
