Hooper: La Segunda bringing a taste of Ybor to South Tampa

Published July 18, 2018

One of Tampa's oldest jokes regards the reluctance of folks in South Tampa to drive north of Kennedy Boulevard.

Even if it's to get great Cuban bread from Ybor City.

La Segunda Bakery will look to give South Tampa residents one more reason to stay close to home. The world's largest producer of Cuban bread opens its second location, a fast-casual restaurant, at 4015 W Kennedy Blvd. on Wednesday. It's old school meets new tech with customers having the opportunity to watch bakers at work in the 95-seat restaurant while taking advantage of USB ports.

The cafe offers the same menu as the Ybor City location, including made-to-order Cuban sandwiches and scacciata — that stuff my friend Sue Carlton devours.

Sounds like people who live South of Kennedy will spend a little less on gas. …

I'll be one of the moderators for a series of Pinellas County School Board candidate forums on July 24 (SPC Clearwater), July 30 (SPC St. Petersburg-Gibbs) and Aug. 2 (SPC Seminole).

Education remains at the heart of a community's success, and these forums should prove vital in shaping voting decisions. Come out.

I'm talking about Diocese of St. Petersburg Bishop Gregory Parkes. The Catholic Press

Kudos to the friendly folks next to me at Clearwater Beach who filled the air with some salsa music, including Eddie Santiago. Lilting horns, summer breezes, perfect. That's all I'm saying.
