A Jacksonville man was arrested in Pasco County early Saturday morning after approaching a local deputy in an attempt to turn himself in.

A Pasco County Sheriff’s deputy was leaving the RaceTrac gas station at 27140 S.R. 56, in Wesley Chapel when a man approached him in the parking lot. According to the sheriff’s office, Marco Stephens, 29, appeared to have blood "all over the front of his clothes" and told the deputy that he was going to kill himself, but decided to turn himself in instead.

Stephens was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife in Jacksonville. He was detained by deputies in Pasco County and held until detectives from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrived to transport him back to North Florida.

According to the local television station, News4Jax, deputies found Ashley Stephens, 34, dead in the parking lot of an apartment complex. Just before 12:30 a.m., police were called to investigate gunshots fired in the area. News4Jax reported that Stephens was found driving his estranged wife’s car in Pasco County.
