SOUTH TAMPA— Tampa’s speakeasy coffee shop, Blind Tiger Cafe added a third shop in the SoHo District, but this time with a twist.
The cafe has partnered with local bow tie company, Ella Bing to open a haberdashery.
The term "blind tiger" dates back to the prohibition era referring to a speakeasy where they would advertise they had a blind tiger inside and charge admission, and in return there was a coffee mug filled with alcohol.
So, owner Roberto Torres named his business Blind Tiger and took the idea a step further to not only serve coffee along with beer and wine, but he conceals a boutique inside the coffee shop.
At the first shop in Ybor City and the second in Seminole Heights, that boutique is Torres’ other business, Black and Denim.
Like the other two shops, this South Tampa location located at 934 S Howard Ave, will share a space with Ella Bing, a local bow tie company that specializes in handcrafted wooden and cloth bow ties, wooden sunglasses, suspenders and more.
Ella Bing is now opening its first haberdashery storefront location after operating online for about five years. To continue its great reputation in the community, they donate 10 percent of sales to the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay and every year host the Beer and Bow Ties supporting suicide prevention and awareness in the community. This year the fundraiser raised $25,000 in one night for the Crisis Center.
For that reason Torres says they’re dear to his heart and it made perfect sense to partner with them.
"For us it was just an amazing opportunity to partner with this local company," Torres said. "It’s a win-win, we bring the traffic and they benefit from it."
Torres is excited about this collaboration because they’ve never done anything like this before, and it will raise the bar for his next location he plans to open this year. The location is not yet confirmed, but St. Petersburg is a possible contender.
"This location is our crown jewel, the one we’re really proud of and the one we want to use as our model for expansion."
Operating everyday from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. you can get any one of their signature drinks like the popular Cafe Bon Bon latte, the Expresso Bon Bon which is a double shot of espresso with sweetened condensed milk, or try one of their sandwiches or acai bowls all under $10.
