Top 5 at noon: Bill would allow trafficking victims to sue hotels; a Florida love story, with tattoos; and more

Here are the latest headlines and updates on tampabay.com:

BILL WOULD ALLOW TRAFFICKING VICTIMS TO SUE HOTELS

When Savannah Parvu was being sold for sex out of a central Florida hotel room, she was just 12 years old. Men came in and raped her, and hotel staff asked nothing and did nothing, she told legislators on Monday. Sometimes, her trafficker asked hotel staff for favors, asking them to open the door to let men inside. They obliged. Parvu’s story is at the center of a debate over a bill in the Florida Legislature that would allow human trafficking victims to sue some of the businesses that most profit from it : hotels and motels. Behind the scenes, the hotel industry is waging a campaign against it, legislators say.

NELSON USES STORY OF JACKSONVILLE VETERAN AS IMMIGRATION DEBATE BEGINS

As the Senate’s immigration debate got started Monday — the outcome very much uncertain — Sen. Bill Nelson told the story of a Jacksonville veteran who faced deportation. "I have always been inspired by the story of Elisha Dawkins," Nelson began.

A FLORIDA LOVE STORY, WITH TATTOOS

Tattoos, along with citrus and sunburns, are modern Florida’s most popular products. With our constantly warm weather, we tend to expose a lot of our skin here, so lots of people like to augment their epidermis with art. Now we’ve got some good news about a Florida woman and her tattoos. The Guinness Book of World Records recently named her the Most Tattooed Woman Alive. Until she was 56, Charlotte Guttenberg didn’t have a single tattoo. Her husband wouldn’t allow it, she said. A few years after he died, she finally got her first tattoo. She also saw a painting of someone with an entire body full of tattoos, and said, "That’s what I want."

KUCHEROV IN RARE COMPANY WITH THIRD 30-GOAL SEASON

Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov snapped out of his 11-game goal drought by scoring a goal in each of his last three games, including one in Monday’s 4-3 loss to the Leafs in Toronto. That sealed Kucherov’s third straight 30-goal season, becoming only the fourth Lightning player to complete that feat (joining Steven Stamkos, Vinny Lecavalier and Marty St. Louis). Kucherov maintained he didn’t lose his mojo during his tough stretch. He just had to stick with it.

KELSEA BALLERINI TALKS ABOUT AVOIDING THE SOPHOMORE SLUMP

Kelsea Ballerini was an unknown independent from Knoxville, Tenn., when her debut single Love Me Like You Mean It rose to No. 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart — the first time that’d happened for a solo female act since Carrie Underwood. Two even bigger singles, Dibs and Peter Pan, came next. Almost before the world fully caught on, Ballerini got a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, and three straight nods for the CMAs’ Female Vocalist of the Year. Later this year, she’ll hit the road with Keith Urban. But first, she’s on a headlining tour that hits Ruth Eckerd Hall on Friday. Before the show she talked about avoiding the sophomore slump and more.

Curry is a quick way to get something flavorful on the table for dinner

Curry dishes are one of my favorite go-tos for a quick and flavorful home-cooked meal. The spice combinations lend a depth that’s hard to come by in a 20-minute dinner, and the sauciness ties a dish of whatever-is-left-in-the-fridge components togeth...
