RIVERVIEW — Winthrop Arts, 11267 Winthrop Main St., presents the 11th annual Winthrop Christmas Tree Lighting at 6:30 p.m. today (Dec. 1). The free community event will help bring in the Christmas season.

From 6:30-7:15 p.m. attendees can enjoy holiday entertainment and the tree lighting followed by The Muppet Christmas Carol on the lawn at 7:30 p.m. Attendees can make their own ornaments at the ornament station hosted by the Arts Factory.

Entertainment is brought to the event by The Brandon Ballet, Winthrop Charter Schools, Dance Dynamics, Central Florida Dance Alliance and more. The event will also have a special visitor from the North Pole.

Attendees can take tours of the Arts Factory, which houses the art education programming for children 5-18 years old. The arts factory is also registering art students for afternoon art classes from many different mediums. A class schedule can be found online at winthroparts.org.

This event is just one of several hosted by Winthrop Arts each year to bring awareness of Winthrop Arts to the community.

This year they are reformatting the event to be more entertaining and audience friendly by moving the event out on the lawn by the Plaza, according to Kathy Collins, executive director for Winthrop Arts.

Attendees can also learn about the Winthrop Arts Festival in March and the pilot program they are starting called the Mobile Art Factory. Winthrop Arts is hoping to fund the necessities for the pilot program and start the program in Wimauma.
