On Medicare? Beware this phone scam

If you are on Medicare, do not let anyone persuade to you to set up a direct deposit account for "Medicare funds." The Better Business Bureau is receiving complaints from around the country about scam phone calls targeting seniors.

Scammers pretend to be from the government, then say that new Medicare cards are in the mail. They ask for bank account numbers so they can send direct deposit "Medicare funds.'' Then they raid victims' accounts.

The scam may feed on the new requirement that Social Security checks must be deposited directly. But Medicare neither sends out funds nor requires direct deposit, the Better Business Bureau says. If anyone tells you differently, hang up.
