Fest to raise money for basketball hub at church

The League of Faith Coalition's "Save Our Children" project is raising money for a basketball complex at Bethel Community Baptist Church, 2901 54th Ave. S.

The league will host SummerFest '09 from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday to promote the program.

PINELLAS PARk

Want to serve on the planning commission?

Pinellas Park is seeking applicants interested in serving on the Planning and Zoning Commission. There is one vacant position.

Duties include serving in an advisory capacity and considering all requests for amendments to the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code.

Applicants must be Pinellas Park residents and must be willing to attend meetings the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Take a kitty home from the SPCA for half-price

June is "Adopt a Shelter Cat Month" and SPCA Tampa Bay has reduced adoption fees by 50 percent to help place cats 6 months and older into permanent, loving homes.

Adoption includes vaccinations (including rabies), spaying or neutering, a microchip and a Cat Talk class. The course in feline behavior is for owners; cats do not attend.

Visitors can see adoptable pets at the SPCA, 9099 130th Ave. N, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Overseas troops need food, snacks, goodies

Troops in the Middle East need candy, cookies, microwave popcorn, peanut butter or cheese crackers, canned fruits, canned meats and tuna, Kool-Aid, Crystal Light, beef jerky, Slim Jims, any small microwave products such as soups and pastas, women's hygiene products, baby wipes, lip balm, sunscreen, socks, Ziploc bags and Q-Tips.

Donations can be dropped off at the Army Recruiting Office at 11223 78th Ave. N, VFW Post 4256 at 12901 Gulf Blvd., VFW Post 9272 at 10997 72nd Ave. N, American Legion Post 7 at 1760 Turner St. in Clearwater, and Extra Space Storage at 4319 Duhme Road in Madeira Beach.

Money is needed to cover shipping. Money orders or checks can be made out to Postmaster and mailed to P.O. Box 86223, Madeira Beach, FL 33738. For information, call Joe Tapp at 432-1057.
