Re: Seniors shouldn't pay taxes | June 14, letter

You pay to be part of a community

This is in response to Robert Kennedy's opinion that seniors over 65 shouldn't pay taxes. With all due respect, Mr. Kennedy, you chose to live in a community. If you wish to live your retirement years in solidarity, I recommend a deserted island where you will gather your own food, catch your own fish and tend to your own medical needs.

Hernando County consists of many families who are here to raise their children, myself included. I understand your children are grown and have been through the "system." I'm sure you didn't pay for all of it on your own. I realize that times are difficult, they are difficult for everyone, believe me, I know.

I'm sure you expect the county to consist of good nurses, doctors, teachers and firefighters. Well, that takes education and it is too valuable for certain members of our society to think they do not have to contribute to it.

I have been working since I was 14 years old. I have been paying into Social Security for the past 17 years and will continue to do so for approximately 35 more, yet it is predicted that Social Security will run dry before I will be eligible for it. Perhaps I should argue that I should not pay those taxes!

Well, until then, enjoy your monthly Social Security check that I am contributing to. And remember, you are part of a community!

Read again what DeWitt wrote

How could anyone ever get the idea that Dan DeWitt is a racist bigot?

Tyler Bush is right in some ways. Hernando is still stuck in the 1950s or further back.

What is the Brooksville Raid Civil War celebration all about? Where is the Union Civil War soldier on the courthouse lawn to honor my teenage great-great-uncle from Tennessee who died fighting for the Union and for my great-great-grandfather from Iowa who fought four long years for the Union because they both hated slavery? Why has the Brooksville city pool not been replaced? Why was there a line drawn and the legal words for it written by Joe Johnston to keep part of Brooksville's citizens in South Brooksville?

My family was in Virginia and the Carolinas in the early 1600s, but we have always had some family members who were thinkers and wanted freedom and equality for everyone.

Dan DeWitt is an outstanding writer. Read again what he wrote on June 9 and think about it and you might understand what he said. Maybe someone you know who reads at a higher grade level could explain it to you.

Doris Taylor, Brooksville
