TAMPA — A Chicago man convicted in May of assaulting an airline attendant while intoxicated on a Tampa-bound flight was sentenced Friday morning to 10 months home detention and ordered to stay away from alcohol during his five years of probation.
Gene R. Komosa, 53, said in court that he drank excessively the night before boarding a Southwest Airlines flight to Tampa at Chicago Midway Airport on Jan. 18.
"How much did you drink?" U.S. District Judge Richard Lazzara asked.
"A lot," Komosa said, adding that he drank more alcohol when he woke up, more at the airport and more while on the plane. "I realize that I messed up royally," Komosa said. "I just lost it, and I don't know what to say."
Witnesses said Komosa made sexual remarks and racial slurs and hit a flight attendant in the face aboard Southwest Airlines flight 3238 as it approached Tampa International Airport.
Prosecutors said during the sentencing that he had lost a previous job because of his drinking.
