TARPON SPRINGS — A city crew installing a water line shortly after noon today dug up what appears to be human bones, authorities say.

The workers had been digging on the west side of Jasmine Avenue between the Cycadia and Rose cemeteries when they discovered the bones.

Alongside the bones, there also was material that appeared to be a disintegrated pine casket.

Tarpon Springs police and the Pinellas County Medical Examiner responded to the scene along Jasmine just north of Keystone Road.

Lt. Barbara Templeton, spokeswoman for the Tarpon Springs Police Department, said the area appeared to be "a really old grave that was unmarked or not properly documented."

Templeton said the disintegrating casket will help date the bones.

The medical examiner and detectives will continue the investigation, she said. The medical examiner will take custody of the remains.
