SUV ends up in family pool; driver arrested in DUI

By Molly Moorhead, Times Staff Writer

Bill Haggerty awoke to an SUV in his pool . “It looks like she actually caught air, because the front half of the car made it across the pool,” he said.

PORT RICHEY

The sudden, thunderous, splashing crash outside their bedroom sent Bill and Laura Haggerty from deep sleep to instant fright.

Bill Haggerty rushed outside to see what had happened while his wife called 911. He found a maroon sport utility vehicle with its back end submerged in his swimming pool.

The driver, who appeared unharmed, opened her door and promptly fell into the water.

It was about 11:30 Wednesday night.

Haggerty helped the woman out and asked if she was okay. She stank of alcohol, he said, and had a glazed look in her eyes.

And after just a moment, she said she wanted to leave.

"I said, 'Ma'am, you can't leave, your truck is in my pool,'" Haggerty, 39, said. "She said, 'I can get it out!'"

But then she got up and bolted through the sliding glass doors into Haggerty's house on Water Oak Drive in Timber Oaks, he said.

Haggerty, in pajamas with no shoes on, followed the woman but gave up when he saw her crawling through some hedges. Sirens were wailing.

"To be honest, I didn't think she was going to get very far," he said.

The Florida Highway Patrol arrested Nicole Renee Carlin, 36, after she was spotted trying to enter another house on a nearby street, a report said.

Carlin, of 7525 Fox Bloom Drive, was charged with trespassing, DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and DUI with property damage. She was being held in the Pasco County jail in Land O'Lakes in lieu of $1,500 bail.

From the look of the damage, Haggerty said, it appeared Carlin drove up Ponderosa Avenue, which ends at his back yard, careened across the grass and through the pool screen.

Carlin told a trooper she didn't know where she had been drinking but that "she had way too many," the report says.

The commotion woke up the Haggertys' 10-year-old daughter. Their son, 8, didn't stir.

"We woke him up later (and said) that we had a truck in the pool," Haggerty said. "He didn't believe us."

Haggerty said it scares him to think about such a thing happening on a Saturday afternoon when his kids could be in the pool. He said he's glad no one was hurt, including Carlin.

The family moved to Port Richey from Boca Raton in July. Bill Haggerty works at Toys "R" Us. His wife works at Target. They're renting the Water Oak Drive house and had hoped to one day buy it.

He's not so sure now.

Then again, the odds of such a calamity happening even once are so long: "Lightning never strikes ... whatever the saying is," said Haggerty.

Because of the DUI, damage and circumstances her bail should be at $150,000 not a crappy $1,500 which is a Joke! This state SUCKS when it comes to criminals.

What a bad move that was moving to Port(Pot) Richey. This type of thing occures there all the time and I wouldn't be suprised if it does happen twice. I would have stayed in Boca Raton instead of moving to PassOut County.

I've just figured out something that has bothered me for some time. That is, why others refer to people here as "goobers." Then I read this..... "maybe she backed in." ya right, after a test drive through the living ro

I hope she loses her drivers license for a few years. And, I hope her car insurance is tripled in cost. Her bail of $1500.00 is a joke. The drunkards bail should have been at least $15,000 don't you think?
by Chris Apr 27, 2008 11:57 AM
Lightning can not strike the same place twice, because once it strikes once, that place isn't there any more...

Does Hulk Hogan have an older daughter?!
by tony Apr 27, 2008 11:56 AM
her life is basically over. if she was on drugs instead of drinking, she'd have a chance at rehab and forgiveness. too bad.
by Mary Apr 27, 2008 11:56 AM
Lightning does strike twice in the same place. Our neighbors' house was hit twice, even after having a tree removed. Two different owners got to experience the lightning strikes.
by evan Apr 27, 2008 11:56 AM
wow what a pain! oh yea, I agree with "Jimmy"......and "Scott" ----seriously?!
by tom Apr 27, 2008 11:56 AM
Well she wont have to worry about working anymore anyway...She might keep her current job...but,if she ever has to look for a new job...it will follow her for life...I know got a DUI for (.9) 6 years ago right after they lowered the limit..
by lelsie Apr 27, 2008 11:55 AM
hang this one she knew she was well over the limit and she needs to take some serious drunk drivin course's like ten times over ..so she can not be so ingnorant just how dumb she was/ is. really bad and she is a big dummy too. over 6 ft 200 poun
by Judy Apr 27, 2008 11:54 AM
I agree with David, why only $1,000 ???? She should be in jail NOW, and her bail should be extreamly HIGH, what she did was really nasty, and it's really lucky she didn't kill someone. Keep her in the slammer!!!! NO BAIL!!!!!
by another Scott Apr 25, 2008 4:52 PM
backed in? are you a drunk as her?
by Josh Apr 25, 2008 4:51 PM
Wow, I just replaced the screens around my pool, and thats definitely gonna be a heartache.
by Ben Apr 25, 2008 4:47 PM
This article is horrible! It puts a happy smiley face on an compleatly deplorable act! God only knows how many other lives this woman risked during this escapade, and I find it hard to believe its the only time she has been drunk driving. OUTRAGE
by Greg Apr 25, 2008 4:46 PM
Um, Scott...if you watched the video, you see where the car entered the yard..on the opposite side if the pool.....no speculation is involved.
by ttocS Apr 25, 2008 4:46 PM
Hey Scott, It couldn't have backed in as there is a house in the way.
by Maria Apr 25, 2008 4:40 PM
Lighting can strike multiple times in one spot! The guy should move immediately!
by Scottdebunker Apr 25, 2008 3:01 PM
Scott...maybe they didn't think that was a possiblity because of all the fence/bush attached to the front and in the pool with her
by Jimmy Apr 25, 2008 2:55 PM
look at the picture, how was the car supposed to have backed in, from the living room?
by Scott Apr 25, 2008 12:57 PM
Rather than speculating that the truck flew threw the air and skipped to the far side of a swimming pool (more than a little unlikely), has nobody speculated that the truck simply backed in? Surprising that nothing in your article even ment
by Larry Apr 25, 2008 12:51 PM
In this case, lightning may strike every Saturday night or so. I'd put up a nice strong wall...
by david Apr 25, 2008 12:48 PM
All that and only 1,500 bail? The woman was anhialated, ran to elude police, admitted to being drunk, caused all that damage..people who write back checks get held on more money than that.

How does where they work have anything to do with the article?
