TAMPA — It was at Hole 13 — the farthest point from the country club — where Dwight Monreal narrowly escaped the jaws of an alligator eager to take him down Saturday.

"It was the most frightening thing I've ever seen," said Matt Johnson, a golf cart attendant at the Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club, where Monreal was wading for golf balls when the gator attacked. "It's so scary to think about what would have happened … that he might not have come back."

Monreal, 62, of Port. St. Lucie is a professional golf ball diver who's been in the business for years, said his son, Zachary.

He was at the club Saturday afternoon to gather balls from the more than 14 lakes at the club like he did every two months, said Joey Zarella, the club's front desk attendant.

"He told me earlier that he didn't have his partner today," Zarella said. "There are usually two of them but today he was alone."

Johnson, who has worked at the club for two years, said everything looked fine around 4:30 p.m when Monreal waded into the lake in his scuba gear. But in a matter of seconds the 10- to 12-foot gator seized his arm and took him into a spin preparing to drag him under water.

"We rushed toward the water and the gator let go of him," Johnson said. "I like to think we scared him."

A club member called Zarella, who called for help. And Johnson and the club member brought Monreal back to the clubhouse where the ambulance and police were waiting.

Remarkably, he suffered only a dislocated left shoulder and puncture wounds to his left arm, police said.

Monreal was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where a spokeswoman said he would be released Saturday night.

Though this is not the first time a gator has been seen at the club, this is the first attack Zarella can remember.

Zarella pointed out it's gator mating season, which may explain the animal's aggression.

"He's so lucky," Zarella said. "I guess the wet suit didn't taste so good."

Hole 13 will be closed until the animal is caught and killed.

this is a sad... but funny situation I can't believe that people don't expect animals to act like animals. when that gator walked into the ladies kitchen last week he was in the wrong place, well that diver swam into guess what... the gators

Funny how the trapper called it a 'nuisance animal.' I find golfers who suck at it and have their noses in the air to be a nuisance...so should they should be disposed of as well??

I have to admire the guy. There is no cicumstance on this planet that would get me in Florida fresh water.

"The sea was angry that day. Like an old man trying to return soup at a deli."
by Todd Apr 28, 2008 3:54 PM
Dont kill the animal - just relocate it to the swamp.
by Jim Apr 28, 2008 3:54 PM
Oh boy! gator chops mmmmm
by ballfrog Apr 28, 2008 3:53 PM
Joe: The company I dive for sells about 40 million recovered balls per year, many through Wal-mart. So, Matt, some of us will take our chances performing work that can do a little to reduce our "throw-away" economy.

Humans are gods. Wildlife are weeds. Fish & Wildlife will make sure that this Florida philosophy towards nature is adhered to. It's a DEAD gator now. No appeals on death row for this critter.
by Dave Apr 28, 2008 11:03 AM
JS, don't our taxes pay for the Florida Fish and Wildlife to handle this sort of thing?
by simon Apr 28, 2008 11:02 AM
lets protect all these critters that want to eat us (gators, sharks, viruses, bacteria, etc). gator boots! shark skin shoes!
by Allen Apr 28, 2008 10:01 AM
Leave the guy alone - he's just trying to make a living, without wearing a paper hat - Thanks Florida for 8 great years of Bush!
by Andrea Apr 28, 2008 9:11 AM
I'm glad he's alright but why does the alligator need to be killed? Is that the easier, cheaper way? Who profits off of that? The man who "rescues" the gator. For shame!
by JS Apr 28, 2008 9:11 AM
Dave if you will pay for the transportation I'm sure they will save the gator...
by raiderhater Apr 28, 2008 9:10 AM

by Mat Apr 27, 2008 9:04 PM
The guy was an idiot for going into the water to retieve of all things....golf balls. For god's sake, go to walmart and buy some new ones. I hope he has health insurance, if not, he should be made to pay the hospital and ambulance bill. MORON!!!
by Tony Apr 27, 2008 9:04 PM

by SwampBum Apr 27, 2008 9:04 PM

by Dave Apr 27, 2008 6:15 PM

by Louise Apr 27, 2008 6:10 PM

by Sable Apr 27, 2008 6:10 PM
There was only one dangerous animal in the lake and it wasn't the gator...
by James Apr 27, 2008 11:27 AM
...man enters animal environment, animal does what animals do; man takes revenge!
by Dave Apr 27, 2008 11:27 AM
Comes with the job I guess. Like another said, when you rape their habitat they are forced to mingle with humans. What do you expect?
by ben Apr 27, 2008 10:27 AM
"the ambulance and police were waiting at the club house"... GO HELP!!
by PASCO PETE Apr 27, 2008 9:35 AM
BEFORE THE ATTACK WAS HE ABLE TO RETRIEVE ANY OF MY GOLF BALLS?
by matt Apr 27, 2008 8:35 AM
can't wait to hear the PETA folks crying that the gator was only doing what was natural, and should be allowed to chew on someone else. maybe a kid or kitten next.
by tranottoc Apr 27, 2008 8:35 AM
It is way past time to re-open the season on those critters and allow once again the processing of their meat and hides at least until control of this dangerous animal has been regained.
by louise Apr 27, 2008 8:35 AM
because man has raped the habitat wildlife have nowhere to go. this IS their home too.
by Todd Apr 27, 2008 8:35 AM
Natural selection....By choosing to swim in golf course ponds, he has chosen to enter the food chain. Smart!
