PALM HARBOR — It's a simple one-story house with slate blue siding, a neat driveway and a hose curled on the lawn. The mail rests on a wrought-iron shelf on the front stoop.

But look closer. Something is amiss.

Newspapers cover the windows. Black drapes, held up by masking tape, prevent anyone from seeing inside. More than 20 flies beat against one windowpane.

After a neighbor reported a strong odor Sunday, Pinellas sheriff's deputies went in. They discovered 13 chihuahuas, but found no people living there.

Wearing gas masks and protective gloves and boots, the deputies seized the dogs and turned them over to the Suncoast Animal League.

The animals had some food, deputies said, but no access to the outdoors, fresh air or air-conditioning.

"I've been doing this for 20-something years and this is one of the worst that I've seen," said Rick Chaboudy, director of the rescue group.

Trash piles reached higher than Chaboudy's head, he said, and the smell, a combination of garbage and dog feces, "literally gagged you."

Annette Dettloff, a board member at Suncoast Animal League, came to the scene and took pictures. Her first glimpse halted her.

"That's where the shock hits you," she said. "How could this possibly exist within this house?"

The Suncoast staff took the small dogs to its shelter, a short drive away. They were dirty and scared, staffers said. Some had open sores. One may be pregnant. All stunk.

Resident Victoria Strickland drove up to the house while deputies were there. She told deputies the dogs are her pets and that she had taken good care of them. But deputies gave her a notice to appear in court for animal abandonment.

Chaboudy said he overheard her tell deputies she recently had been living away from the house.

Strickland signed papers Thursday giving custody of the 13 chihuahuas to the rescue group. The dogs should be available for adoption next week. Suncoast Animal Rescue is at 1030 Pennsylvania Ave.

I know that as long as i have anything to do with this i will make sure that she goes to jail an lives like a DOG,,, People that do things like that need to have there heads examined......
by Betty May 23, 2008 8:57 PM
Yes, good question...why wasn't she arrested???? And, Rick, Hats off to you for your efforts. Also, Annabelle's Mommy for getting a "pound puppie"!! More people should get to the pound to get their pets. Annabelle, your a lucky little dog! :0)
by Bernie May 23, 2008 8:54 PM
I hope she never had children. I can only imagine what a fine addition to society they are!!
by Jason May 23, 2008 5:13 PM
They should have arrested that evil witch on the spot for multiple counts of animal cruelty.
by Annabelle's Mommy May 23, 2008 4:57 PM
As I read this with my rescued pound pup cuddled next to my leg in my recliner I remember wishing I could take every animal in the shelter home with me the day I adopted her.
by Samantha May 23, 2008 4:21 PM
How can a person be so cruel to leave their animals alone in their own filth? We don't,why should an animal that has gotten to use to us caring for them to survive on their own?
by louise May 23, 2008 3:09 PM
it takes a special person like rick who won't walk away from an animal in need. people who do this need STRONG punishment while animals suffer in silence.
by Dog Lover May 23, 2008 3:05 PM
Pets? You move out and leave these dogs alone like this? People like you don't deserve pets.
by Cindi May 23, 2008 2:58 PM
WOW! I can't believe this! My mother got a chihuahua from Pennsylvannia Ave in 1980. She said that she saved the dogs life, said there where many in a fenced yard some where skin and bones. If the same house how did this go unnoticed so many years?
by john May 23, 2008 2:56 PM
Why would anyone be surprised? Look at what some people do to their own children.
by boyle May 23, 2008 2:47 PM
Great job Rick! You can not be thanked enough for what you are doing for animals!
by Jake May 23, 2008 2:34 PM
Let's put her in jail for life. OR, maybe she has some sort of mental condition. Did you ever consider that before you go off on the deep end about Dogs Rule?
by Ann May 23, 2008 2:32 PM
I think we should stick this lady in a house with about 50 wild baboons and see how she does.
by Ann May 23, 2008 2:31 PM
they should throw this lady in a house with 50 wild baboons for 2 weeks and see how she like it.
by ENough May 23, 2008 2:30 PM
This is very sad. People have become so disconnected that they see animals as stuffed toys not living things. I hope she gets help and must do community service in an animal shelter.
by Di May 23, 2008 2:14 PM
She should be made to stay in there in the same living conditions, only turn off the water so she couldn't use the toilet and flush
by Linda May 23, 2008 2:14 PM
My sentiments exactly!!!
by candi May 23, 2008 10:44 AM
Ya know sometimes I really hate people !! How can someone be so cruel and un caring to something as innocent and loving as mans best friend ??! Just dont get it ???!!
