The Sheriff's Office unveiled a new Spanish translation service for its Web site Tuesday after correcting a few words the service took too literally.
The town of Holiday became "dia de fiesta." And Sheriff Bob White became Bob Blanco.
Those mistakes have been corrected, and Spanish-speaking residents can now read much of pascosheriff.com en espanol by clicking a small Mexican flag at the bottom of the home page.
The service does not change any of the links at the top and on the side of the page. The major functions of the site — viewing arrest inquiries, for example — can be used only in English. But the translation of articles and safety tips is largely accurate.
Installing the WorldLingo service costs almost $500 a year, Sheriff's Office spokesman Kevin Doll said.
Blanco — er, White — saw the translation on other Web sites and thought it would make a good addition to pascosheriff.com, Doll said.
He had a good laugh when the office's information technology director told him about the glitch.
"They had to check the parameters to make sure something isn't translated," Doll said.
