The skinny: Festival tries to set record for sunglasses

Shades of success

Festival tries to set record for Sunglasses

There appears to be another arcane world record in Grand Rapids, Mich., this time for the most people wearing sunglasses at night. Gilda's LaughFest organizers in the past three years have overseen record-setting attempts for donning false mustaches, wearing chicken beaks and tossing rubber chickens. The fourth annual festival kicked off Thursday with an effort to break the sunglasses record. The current mark was set in July 2012 by 1,642 people at Chicago's Wrigley Field. LaughFest spokesman Tyler Lecceadone said the group's count shows that 1,675 people wore sunglasses Thursday night.

Scratch and win

Man returns for ticket, wins $10M

Fifty-three-year-old Jerry Kajfasz of Lancaster, N.Y., won a $10 million jackpot from a $20 scratch-off ticket he purchased recently at a suburban Buffalo store. He bought seven scratch-off tickets but the clerk nearly handed him an eighth one costing $20. Kajfasz caught the mistake and handed it back. After winning a total of $25 from the tickets, he went back and used the winnings to buy the same $20 scratch-off ticket the clerk had almost given to him by mistake. That Win for Life Spectacular ticket wound up being a winner with a guaranteed minimum jackpot of $10 million.

Off-campus offense

Police: Students gave beer to dog

Authorities say two students at a New York state college were charged with animal abuse after a dog was held upside down over a keg and forced to drink beer. Police say one of the College at Brockport students held the black Labrador retriever over a keg and apparently forced the animal to drink from the tap during an off-campus party Saturday.
