Open house: The David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts will host an open house including entertainment, tours, samples and sidewalk sale, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at 1010 N Macinnes Place. Free. Visit strazcenter.org.

Understanding food allergies: Mary Keith, with the Hillsborough County Extension Service, will discuss various types of food sensitivities and allergies, and also how to live, cook and shop with food allergies. 6 p.m. Wednesday at North Tampa Branch Library, 8916 N Boulevard. Honors symposia: Kacy Tillman, assistant professor of English, will talk on "Turncoats, Traitors and Tories of the American Revolution," 5 p.m. Wednesday at the University of South Florida, Library AV2, 4202 E Fowler Ave. Free. Call (813) 257-3545.

Community yard sale: First United Methodist Church of Lutz, 960 W Lutz Lake Fern Road, is holding a community yard sale to benefit various international missions from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the church parking. Sale items include books, DVDs, CDs, toys, clothing, and household items. Breakfast, lunch and other concessions will also be available for purchase. The cost to vendors is $25 per space, and table rentals are $10 each for those who need them. Sellers may keep all profits or donate any portion to the church missions program. Sellers are asked to contact Nancy Gray at (813) 963-5225 by noon Thursday to reserve a spot.

Buddy Run: The second annual Buddy Run 5K and Fun Run is Nov. 4 at Lake Park, 17302 N Dale Mabry Highway. The event, run by Congregation Beth Am and Buddy Baseball, will raise funds for the Buddy Baseball program, a noncompetitive league for boys and girls 8 to 18 years old with special needs. Each player is paired with a "buddy'' to assist the player as needed. To register, or for information about the race, go to active.com and type "Buddy Run'' in the search field.
