SPRING HILL

Bills makes Fire Rescue district independent

Spring Hill Fire Rescue became an independent district Thursday with the signing of House Bill 1147 by Gov. Charlie Crist. The bill, which grew from a referendum effort in November, frees the district from the county's control and creates a special fire and rescue district that will be overseen by an elected five-member board. The district will have the authority to collect ad valorem taxes, user charges and impact fees, and set special assessments. The bill, which was introduced to the Legislature by Rep. Robert Schenck, calls for a 2.50 millage cap. The district's current millage rate is 2.2686.
