festival begins with dancing, music at docks

Tarpon Springs will kick off its multiweek Summer Solstice Festival of the Performing Arts today, with "A Night of the Islands," featuring Greek music and dancing from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Sponge Docks on Dodecanese Boulevard. Another festival activity is David Ives' off-Broadway comedy All in the Timing at 8 tonight at Tarpon Springs Cultural Center, 101 S Pinellas Ave. The show also is at 2 p.m. Sunday and June 28 and 8 p.m. Friday and June 27. Tickets are $15, or $13 for members. .

Museum event embraces arts

The Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art will host "Summer Bash," a social event celebrating the arts in our community 7-10 p.m. today at the museum, 600 Klosterman Road, Tarpon Springs. Entertainment will be provided by the De Lei'd Parrots, a Jimmy Buffet tribute band, with beer, wine, soft drinks and light appetizers available. During the event, the Professional Association of Visual Artists will present an awards program for its members exhibition, on view in the museum auditorium through July 11. Tickets are $15 for adults, and free for children 12 and younger. Proceeds benefit educational programing at the museum. Call (727) 712-5762.

CLEARWATER

Free computer training offered

People age 55 and older can sign up for a one-on-one computer training session at the Clearwater Main Library, 100 N. Osceola Ave. Teen library volunteers will teach the sessions through Aug. 14. Training includes basic computer skills, Internet basics, e-mail, use of the library catalog and Microsoft Word. Classes will be held in the Youth Services Department. Sessions are free. Dinner to benefit arthritis research

"My Big Fat Italian Funeral,'' a murder mystery dinner, will be held at 6 p.m. June 27 at the Grand Hotel, 20967 U.S. 19 N, Clearwater. The show, with a full cast, is to benefit Arthritis Research Institute of America to support osteoarthritis research. The program involves audience participation. Cost: $63. Pet Bowl aims to help shelter

Go bowling for animals. SPCA Pet Bowl will be held June 27 at Seminole Lanes, 8668 Park Blvd. Five member teams will receive three games of bowling, shoe and bowling ball rental, a Pet Bowl T-shirt, lunch and a complimentary team photo.
