Hernando sub fares well in Maryland races
A human-powered submarine built by a team of Hernando County students finished second overall in this week's 10th Annual International Submarine Races in Bethesda, Md. Team adviser Steve Barton said that pilot Curtis Weaver pushed the submarine Sublime to 5.975 knots on an initial run on Monday, a speed that was bested two days later by Talon 1, a submersible entered by Florida Atlantic University, which recorded a top speed of 6.012 knots. Barton said that a broken gearbox kept the Sublime sidelined all day Thursday. However, the submarine managed to win a head-to-head race over Talon 1 on Friday. Barton said the second-place finish was the best his team has achieved since it began entering the races in 2003. The races are held every other year at a U.S. Navy submarine facility.
