Just in case you missed last year's Ironman World Championship 70.3 — and, really, if you were in town, how could you have? — NBC will broadcast it at 5 p.m. today. Viewers can check out the city, its beaches, visitors and the 2,000 athletes who tested their physical and mental limits as they swam 1.2 miles, cycled 56 miles and ran 13.1 miles through Pinellas. Roofer now faces grand theft charge
A former employee of T.C. Roofing was arrested Friday, charged with stealing more than $60,000 from customers. Barry G. Smith, 48, of Palm Harbor, turned himself in at the Pinellas County Jail after an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement found he diverted thousands of dollars in roofing repair and installation payments from Tampa Bay area customers. Victims paid Smith for the building materials, but instead of disbursing the money appropriately, he pocketed it, authorities said. As of result of the scheme, the FDLE said, companies that had not been paid for roofing materials placed liens against the homes of some of Smith's victims. Smith was booked into the jail on a charge of grand theft and released after posting $10,000 bail. He could not be reached for comment Friday evening.

Bujalski selected city's vice mayor
Julie Ward Bujalski was picked to hold the ceremonial vice mayor title — a post that goes to a different commissioner each year — on Thursday, but not before some squabbling that has become common of this City Commission. Commissioner Dave Eggers nominated the recently re-elected Bujalski, the only commissioner who hadn't served as a vice mayor before. Commissioner Deborah Kynes, who served as vice mayor over the past year, nominated Commissioner Julie Scales. Before members filled out their ballot, Scales said that usually the most senior commissioner is picked to be vice mayor. Not so, said Eggers. The city uses seniority as a tie breaker if no nominee receives a majority after three votes or if no one is nominated. Bujalski was elected 3 to 2.

Dogs suspected in brutal deaths of two cats
Two cats found dismembered in unincorporated Largo recently were not killed by human hands, Pinellas County sheriff's officials said Friday.
Instead, detectives and county animal control officers found the cats' injuries consistent with dog bites, not wounds inflicted by sharp instruments.
The first dead cat was discovered in the 11100 block of Bella Loma Drive on March 13 by a woman who returned home to find her pet dead in the yard.
On April 4, a man walking his dogs just before midnight found the remains of a dismembered cat in a neighbor's yard in the 13500 block of Sorrento Drive.
Officials said whatever killed the cats didn't eat them, suggesting that the attacker was a dog, not a wild animal such as a coyote.
