Ham radio buffs to show skills in emergencies

Members of the Spring Hill Amateur Radio Club will participate in a nationwide emergency communications demonstration "field day" from 2 p.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hernando County Airport (enter at American Aviation, 2495 Broad St.). They will speak with and send and receive messages with other "hams" throughout the nation. Visitors are welcome. Ham radio operators provide communications in emergency situations and disasters, when local and long-distance communications are cut off. 300 households will get free food

Compassion Food Outreach will distribute enough food to feed more than 300 households starting at 8 a.m. Saturday at Grace World Outreach Church, 20366 Cortez Blvd. Those receiving food must have their ID cards. The outreach is co-sponsored by the church and Mid-Florida Community Services. For information, call 796-1425.

Learn how to build a water garden

A free class, Creating a Water Garden, will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, 19490 Oliver St. Those interested in adding a water garden will learn about design, construction and plant selection for a water garden. Preregistration is required. Call 754-4433.

Early learning on display July 2

The Early Learning Coalition of Pasco and Hernando counties will host a Jumpstart to Early Learning event from 2 to 7 p.m. July 2 at the office at 15506 County Line Road. The free event will include activities and educational experiences for school readiness children (5 and younger), who will each receive a lunch box or backpack filled with items such as books, tissues, crayons, glue and scissors. Those interested may also visit the mobile outreach van, a library filled with toys, books and teacher resources to promote early learning. For information, call Sheila Chambers at 754-5068.
