New Port Richey police found a small child passed out inside a parked car Monday afternoon, hot to the touch and unresponsive, according to a police report. Fire Rescue treated the child for dehydration and possible heat exhaustion, the report said.
The Volvo was in a lot near U.S. 19 and Marine Parkway; about 200 feet away, the officer found the child's mother, Jo Ann Esposito, 30, talking to a friend and under the influence of drugs, the report said. Confronted about her child, Esposito said she had only left the child alone "for a little while," according to the report.
Inside the Volvo police found two syringes, which Esposito told police she used to inject herself with the painkiller oxycodone.
Esposito was charged with child abuse, resisting arrest, giving false information to law enforcement and possession of drug paraphernalia. She is being held in Land O'Lakes jail in lieu of $5,650 bail.
