Children can get free shots, checkups and backpacks
The Junior League of St. Petersburg will hold its 12th annual Back-to-School Care Fair on Saturday at the Johnnie Ruth Clarke Health Center. The event, which served 2,000 last year, offers health screenings, immunizations, dental and vision exams, and school physicals. Participating kids will also be provided with free backpacks filled with donated school supplies. The backpacks are limited to K-12 children who attend the fair and while supplies last.

Get a helpful earful and a chance at a baseball
At its meeting Aug. 18, the Shore Acres Neighborhood Association will discuss ongoing dredging in neighborhood canals and traffic calming plans. City Council member Bill Dudley is scheduled to attend and provide updates on the council. Candidates for the District 3 County Commission seat will participate in a Q&A forum. The meeting will end with the raffle of a baseball signed by Rays second baseman Akinori Iwamura. Raffle tickets will be sold as a neighborhood fundraiser.

Plan now to get involved in CareFest
Volunteers are being sought for St. Petersburg's CareFest, set for Sept. 20. CareFest is a community volunteerism event to provide care and assistance citywide to those in need. Neighborhood groups, churches, nonprofit agencies, businesses, individuals and families can volunteer to tackle one-day projects that range from painting homes and mowing and cleaning up yards to distributing food and visiting the sick.
