AIR CONDITIONER UNIT IS STOLEN FROM CHURCH

Thefts of copper-rich air conditioning units are up this year across Pasco County, and churches aren't exempt from the trend. Officials at Covenant Christian Church say that sometime Thursday night or early Friday morning, someone stole the $56,000 air conditioning unit at their church at 6814 Indiana Ave. When senior pastor Bob Panariello got to the church about 9 a.m. Friday to set up tables for a giveaway of back-to-school supplies scheduled for today, he noticed parts of the unit strewn on the roof. Panariello called the New Port Richey police, who said the unit was probably stolen to be stripped for copper parts. The unit was only 7 months old, said Tom McDonald, associate pastor, and it took the congregation about five months to raise money for it. On Friday, a repairman came out to replace the unit. McDonald hopes it can be fixed in time for today's giveaway and Sunday's 10 a.m. church service.

Briefcase-carrying thief robs bank

A man walked into a Colonial Bank shortly after 9 a.m. Friday, told a teller that he had a bomb in his briefcase and demanded cash, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office said. The man left the bank at 9431 U.S. 19 on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. The Sheriff's Office is still looking for the robber, described as a white male, about 5-feet-8-inches tall, in his mid- to late-60s, with white, bushy hair. He wore a heavily-worn, light blue baseball cap with a white insignia above the bill. He also wore a blue blazer and has crooked teeth. Group to give away school supplies

The Volunteer Way Food Bank, 7820 Congress St., will host a Back to School Bash from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 23. Children in need will receive free school supplies. Women will receive free clothes and shoes. There will be information on affordable heath insurance with Florida KidCare and how to apply for food stamps, cash assistance and Medicaid.
