Scrap yard sells vases back to cemetery

The owners of the Eternal Rest Memories Park and Funeral Home had a dilemma. After 110 vases had been stolen from the cemetery by a former employee, the bronze vases ended up at a local scrap yard. The scrap yard wouldn't give them back — not without someone putting up some money. At first, cemetery co-owner Charles Scalisi III said he didn't own the vases — they belonged to the families — so he shouldn't be the one to buy them back. But he changed his mind and decided to negotiate with the scrap yard, OneSteel. He said he bought them back at half price, spending roughly $500. "It was the right thing to do. That was the bottom line," Scalisi said. "They didn't belong in the scrap yard." The cemetery is in the process of trying to match each vase to the grave from which it was stolen.
