PINE ISLAND

Advisory means no swimming

at Pine Island

The Hernando County Health Department has issued a swimming advisory at Pine Island Beach, as bacterial test results received Thursday indicate the water quality as poor. Contact with the water may pose an increased risk of disease exposure, especially for very young children, older adults and those who have weakened immune systems. For information, call Albert Gray, environmental manager at the Health Department, at (352) 540-6802.

SPRING HILL

Controlled burns begin next month

About 400 acres in the Weekiwachee Preserve in Hernando and Pasco counties just west of Spring Hill will be targeted with small, controlled burns during October. The Southwest Florida Water Management District, which owns the preserve, performs the burns to clear out the undergrowth that could otherwise fuel a serious wildfire. The agency will also conduct controlled burns next month on 260 acres in the Annuteliga Hammock in Hernando County, near Royal Highlands and U.S. 19.
